Measuring the transition to a circular water economy
Jacobs, in collaboration with Imperial College London, worked with U.K. Water Industry Research (UKWIR) and its project steering group to develop the first industry-wide Circular Economy Accounting Tool (CEAT) for the U.K. and Irish water sector. The tool provides the first sector-wide framework for measuring circularity in water utility operations. The need to shift from a linear to a circular economy — where resources are used more efficiently, waste is minimized and environmental value is restored — has gained global recognition. Yet many sectors, including water, have lacked the metrics and frameworks needed to track progress. The CEAT fills this gap by offering a structured approach for utilities to assess how circular their operations are and where improvements can be made. Built on internationally recognized circular economy standards, the tool includes a set of indicators and metrics tailored to the water sector’s specific processes and challenges. It enables companies to benchmark their performance and plan targeted actions that align with environmental, economic and social priorities. The tool also supports alignment with broader sustainability frameworks, such as natural capital, social value and whole-systems thinking — helping utilities advance their circular economy goals in a measurable, meaningful way. This project builds on a series of UKWIR initiatives over the past five years aimed at embedding circular economy principles across the sector. The CEAT now provides the practical foundation to move from ambition to accountability, enabling water companies to track and accelerate their progress in becoming more regenerative and resilient. “As we find

Jacobs CEO Bob Pragada discusses trends in data centers, life sciences and quantum computing
Jacobs Chair & CEO Bob Pragada joined Frank Holland on CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange to discuss significant growth trends creating meaningful tailwinds for the company. He highlighted Jacobs’ expanding role in the buildout of large-scale AI data centers, manufacturing capacity in the life sciences sector and facilities developing next-generation science. For example, Jacobs is supporting quantum computing leader PsiQuantum with the buildout of its second quantum computing facility in Chicago, Illinois — an effort aimed at delivering one of the world’s first commercial-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Jacobs is also supporting the buildout of PsiQuantum’s facility in Brisbane, Australia. In the life sciences sector, Bob noted continued momentum in the GLP-1 market, where new entrants and delivery methods are driving another wave of capital deployment and manufacturing expansion. He also highlighted continued growth in oncology and cancer therapy developments as companies advance new treatment modalities. Beyond advanced facilities, Bob also pointed to continued investment in improvements to water, transportation and energy and power infrastructure in the United States — areas that continue to drive sustained growth for Jacobs. Toronto’s future, flood-protected: Engineering excellence beneath the city
As part of Toronto’s long-term Basement Flooding Protection Plan, the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System (FSSTSS) is a transformative infrastructure project designed to protect more than 4,500 properties from flooding. Now, the project has received a major industry award recognizing the team’s innovative engineering, technical excellence and strong commitment to minimizing disruption in the community. Led by the City of Toronto and the EBC Bessac Joint Venture (EBJV) team, the project’s award-winning phase, Contract 2, involved the construction of a 2.4-kilometer (~1.5 mile)-long, 4.5-meter (~14 foot)-diameter storm sewer tunnel, buried as deep as 45 meters (~147 feet) beneath Toronto. Threading through tight urban corridors with curves as sharp as 120 meters (~393 feet), the tunnel required a highly specialized approach. The team worked with Bessac to develop a custom Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPB TBM) featuring a double-articulated shield and an 18-meter (59-foot) screw conveyor capable of navigating the tunnel’s complex geometry. A defining moment came when the team encountered an unexpected face instability during the construction of a back gallery. With the TBM already on site and the original launch method no longer viable, the team quickly re-engineered the strategy. In just three months, they modified the TBM to launch umbilically — an extraordinary feat that required redesigning the screw conveyor, thrusting system and muck handling operations, all while staying on schedule. The team also introduced a novel logistics system at the 46-meter (~148 foot) deep launch shaft. Using hydraulic rail switches, sliding tables and car
