STEAM at Jacobs

STEAM and sustainability are at the heart of our business and we are united in developing and delivering a global STEAM education and engagement program that demonstrates our commitment to equality, inclusion and diversity.

Jacobs; Challenging today. Reinventing tomorrow. #STEAMatJacobs

At Jacobs, STEAM and sustainability are at the heart of our business and we are united in developing and delivering a global STEAM education and engagement program that demonstrates our commitment to equality, inclusion and diversity.

To us, STEAM encompasses our core values and aligns with TogetherBeyond and Jacobs’ Action Plan for Advancing Justice and Equality, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, our Jacobs Employee Networks and our Collectively strategic causes.

Jacobs has chosen to use “STEAM” rather than “STEM” for several reasons:

  • STEAM highlights a broader and more inclusive range of interests and topics in addition to science, technology, engineering and math.
  • It provides a greater opportunity for our employees to see themselves in STEAM.
  • 50 K

hours of STEAM volunteering we hope to achieve by 2025

  • 3 K+

hours of STEAM volunteering to date

Our approach to STEAM streamlines and amplifies the social value that we create in the communities where we live and work – this means that we share our STEAM resources with anyone who wants or needs them.

By uniting and growing our global STEAM efforts to create an inclusive STEAM education and engagement program we hope to engage employees and students around the world. And our STEAM program will help Jacobs identify and secure a diverse talent pipeline for the future, contributing to our 40-40-20 goal by 2025 (40% women, 40% men, 20% any gender).

“In order to create a long-term and sustainable behavioral shift toward climate change, we must engage, educate and embed those traits early in our future generations, so they are inspired to do things better. At Jacobs, STEAM and sustainability are at the heart of our business – we are united in growing our global approach to STEAM to create inclusive education opportunities and support greater social value, inclusion, diversity and equality.”

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect is a program designed to create lasting behavior change and habit formation by providing pupils with the knowledge and understanding they need to put sustainability at the heart of every decision they make as the consumers of the future. The program works with young people every year, over the course of each of their 7 years at primary school.

Moon Survival STEAM Activity

Artemis 1 VAB

Did you know that Artemis I is the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration to the moon and beyond?

Artemis I will be the first integrated flight test of NASA’s deep space exploration system. NASA’s deep space exploration system consists of the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Jacobs is responsible for receiving all SLS and Orion flight hardware, assembling and integrating all the components, conducting final test and checkout, transporting the vehicle to the pad, helping to launch it on the mission, and then recovery. Explore more about our role on the Artemis program.

Want to experience the excitement of the Artemis program at home? You're in luck! We need your help to celebrate all things STEAM and have created a Moon Survival Activity to help generate excitement and buzz around the historic Artemis I launch.

The details:

  • You are on a mission to the moon when your thrusters fail and your spacecraft crashes 50 miles from the landing site.

  • You have salvaged 15 items.

  • Rank the items in terms of importance to help you get to the landing site safely.

  • You can do this challenge alone, in pairs or in groups.

  • Share once you complete the challenge #STEAMatJacobs #SeeYourselfInSTEAM #Artemis #WeAreGoing.

“Like Jacobs, STEM Learning is driven by ensuring every young person has access to a great broad and balanced education, including all the elements of STEAM. We know this starts with supporting teachers – ensuring they have the subject-specific training and assistance they need. It also means inspiring and motivating young people – through engagement with role models such as STEM Ambassadors. We are indebted to the whole team at Jacobs for the support they give to us, young people, teachers and schools.”
