Sea North Satellite Modernization Concourse C renovation offers a better way to fly

Photos courtesy of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. With passenger growth ten times higher now than when the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) North Satellite opened in the 1970s, and without any major updates or renovations in those 48 years, the facility was in need of an upgrade. Read about this $658 million expansion and renovation project and how Jacobs provided project management services to deliver upgrades to one of the airport’s original underground train stations. Given significant growth, the need to modernize passenger circulation with wider and energy efficient escalators and elevators was in great demand. The $16 million Concourse C Satellite Transit System Access Upgrade project is benefiting passengers with easily navigable routes from the underground train to concourse level gates while saving energy costs for the airport. Additionally, the renovated concourse-level station entry features a floor-to-ceiling glass enclosure by local artist Cable Griffith, giving passengers a sense of the local Pacific Northwest environment. “This is an important project for us because it has refreshed the station and passenger throughput for our customers,” said Port of Seattle Capital Program Leader Ken Warren. “It has been a team effort to bring all of the project elements together while always keeping focus on providing the best experience for the traveling public.” Jacobs has supported the Port of Seattle since 2012 by providing program and project management services in the implementation of the North Sea-Tac Airport Renovation Program (NorthSTAR). Wetlands

This constructed wetlands pilot protects groundwater, beneficially reuses scarce supplies

With growing concerns about water availability, especially in semi-arid regions, and the high cost of water for potable and agricultural uses, cities around the globe are searching for innovative answers to managing their precious water supplies, and turning to Jacobs to help bring groundbreaking efforts and new ideas to life. For more than 70 years, we’ve tackled the world’s toughest water challenges, and while treatment technologies have evolved over the years, the goal of ensuring a reliable and affordable source of high-quality water for future residents and businesses remains the same. That’s why we’re designing and piloting some of the most innovative and sustainable solutions—including reliable technology to assist the water supply portfolio for large cities already stressed with limited water supplies to meet the growing demand. One such solution is constructed wetlands (CW) technology, or engineered natural treatment systems that use natural processes in soil, organisms and vegetation for water treatment. Used for decades as an environmentally-beneficial method of treating wastewater pollutants, wetlands historically played a critical role in efficient, low-cost resource management. But using wetlands for reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate – a concentrate with higher pollutant concentrations which may require advanced treatment or brine management to meet discharge regulations – is a natural treatment technology only recently tested on an experimental scale, explains Rajat Chakraborti, a Jacobs water resources and treatment engineer. In a recently published article, “Natural Treatment of High-Strength Reverse Osmosis Concentrate by Constructed Wetlands for Reclaimed Water Use,” Rajat – and co-author Jim Bays, Jacobs

Cross-Industry Collaboration

Cross-industry collaboration: Launching a new IEMA Digital Impact Assessment Primer in the UK

Jacobs has been working with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment’s (IEMA’s) cross-industry Working Group in the U.K. to develop a new primer to outline how our industry can champion Digital Impact Assessment (Digital IA). As leaders in the Environmental Impact Assessment and consenting space, we’re progressing some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the U.K. and globally. This enables our environmental team to offer a unique perspective and align industry progress with the support that we’re already providing to our clients. The IEMA primer defines what Digital IA is, why it is needed and how digital tools and technology can be utilized to support robust and proportionate impact assessments. Digital IA offers benefits for all those engaged in the IA process: practitioners, consenting authorities, stakeholders and the public. These benefits include more efficient assessment and program de-risking; effective communication of IA outcomes; better stakeholder engagement and increased accessibility of information, saving time; adding value; and facilitating informed decision-making. Jacobs joined IEMA’s Digital Working Group in 2018 to share our experience in digital consenting gained from large-scale infrastructure projects such as Transport Scotland’s A9 Dualling Perth to Inverness project, Highways England’s Oxford to Cambridge Expressway project, and the Environmental Agency’s Thames Estuary Asset Management (TEAM2100) program. Across these and other projects, we have deployed unmanned aerial vehicles, geographic information systems, mobile mapping, virtual reality and remote sensing to gather and visualize information more effectively and safely to support program objectives and delivery. Drinking Water Week

There when you need us: Jacobs contract operators help communities keep clean water flowing

As we celebrate Drinking Water Week, May 3 – 9, 2020, Jacobs’ Vice President of Operations Management and Facilities Services Steve Meininger reflects on the critical role played by water operators. Welcome to Drinking Water Week! This year’s DWW theme – There when you need it – is especially fitting . Clean water is always important, and now, as we continue addressing a global pandemic, the role of a safe, reliable water supply to support public health and sanitation cannot be overstated. Local governments and regulated utilities must deliver water to residents and businesses, and many water suppliers face challenges in addition to, or resulting from, managing COVID-19 response. Revenue reductions, strained budgets, aging equipment, growing demand, workforce shortages and tightening regulations can hinder consistent water service. In response to these issues, communities across the U.S., serving more than 37 million people, have opted to contract out their water utility operations. As an industry-leading contract operator, Jacobs brings our client-partners outsourced operations and advisory services that help them make the most of their water treatment facilities, distribution systems and related infrastructure. Our services afford communities a number of benefits to help move them forward. Benefits include: Risk transfer. Local governments must deliver a multitude of services in all conditions. They often employ large staffs at considerable financial exposure for payroll, benefits, training and supplies. Outsourcing water utility operations transfers most or all risk to the operator. The client retains ownership and overall decision-making authority for its assets, but can focus

Cedar Water Treatment Facility

Drinking Water Week: Cedar Water Treatment Facility team

As we celebrate Drinking Water Week, May 3 – 9, 2020, we’re highlighting how Jacobs is making this year’s theme, “It is there when you need it,” a reality through our projects and team of dreamers, makers and doers. In this article, explore the 20-year partnership between Jacobs and Seattle Public Utilities at the Cedar Water Treatment Facility. A cleaner way to clean water When more than a million Seattleites turn a faucet knob for their clear, high-quality treated water, they might be unaware of the planning, vision and labor that brought that precious resource to their glass, water bottle or recipe. A public-private partnership spanning 20 years between Jacobs and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) created the Cedar Water Treatment Facility, which went on line in 2004 and produces 70 % of the water supply for Washington’s largest metropolitan area. SPU and Jacobs collaborated to design, build and operate upgrades to the 180-million-gallon-per-day water plant. Our agreement and delivery strategy were pioneering in their time, and our mutual focus on sustainability added another element of vision to the project. Cedar is a showcase for forward-thinking environmental enhancements. Designers re-used some buildings and equipment from the original water facilities on the site. The former treatment plant is now the chlorination facility, and pipelines onsite are now ozone-contact chambers. Cedar’s operations building is certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold level facility. It includes design elements that save energy, mitigate resource use and minimize environmental impact. Jacobs Cedar Project
