Blue Carbon Solutions

Restore and conserve coastal habitats to sequester carbon, promote biodiversity and strengthen climate resilience

Blue Carbon

Blue carbon — capturing carbon and storing it in marine and coastal ecosystems like saltmarsh and seagrass — turns habitat restoration into broader climate and biodiversity value.

Jacobs combines leading blue carbon research with extensive experience designing and delivering wetland restoration projects, underpinned by a strong understanding of decarbonization strategies, natural capital and environmental markets.

We developed the world’s first carbon code for coastal wetlands in 2014 and have played a leading role in the development of the U.K. Saltmarsh Carbon Code. This experience informs our work with clients to quantify and realize the full range of ecosystem service benefits associated with coastal wetlands, including carbon sequestration, climate resilience, biodiversity enhancements, water quality improvements and community benefits.

Blue carbon: Your questions answered

Blue carbon is the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems such as saltmarshes, mudflats and wetlands. Restoring these habitats can support climate goals, including by generating carbon credits, while also improving biodiversity and resilience.

We work with clients to turn coastal restoration into practical climate and resilience action through scientific assessment, restoration design, implementation support, monitoring and stakeholder engagement.

Blue carbon projects help address hard-to-abate emissions by supporting long-term carbon storage while restoring coastal ecosystems. They also minimize emissions from habitat degradation and contribute to broader decarbonization goals.

Well-designed wetland restoration can reduce erosion and flood risk, enhance habitat, support public access and create stronger, more resilient coastlines for the long term.

Jacobs’ blue carbon work focuses on habitats such as saltmarshes, wetlands, seagrass meadows and managed realignment schemes, where restoration can deliver measurable climate, resilience and environmental benefits.

Yes. Blue carbon projects can strengthen funding and investment cases by generating carbon credits and enhancing natural capital value — aligned with ESG goals. We support this through robust business cases and funding strategies that unlock investment and deliver environmental outcomes.
