Gas and LNG energy infrastructure includes the facilities and systems that produce, process, transport, store and deliver natural gas. This includes pipelines, LNG liquefaction plants, import and regasification terminals, gas storage facilities and gas-fired power generation assets that convert fuel into electricity.
LNG infrastructure allows countries to import natural gas from global suppliers, reducing dependence on a single domestic resource or pipeline route. Liquefying gas for shipping enables flexible international supply chains that strengthen energy security and stabilize energy markets during supply disruptions.
LNG is created by cooling natural gas to a liquid so it can be transported efficiently by ship. At import terminals, the LNG is warmed and converted back into gas through regasification before being delivered into pipelines or used for power generation and industrial energy systems.
A gas infrastructure system typically includes gas production facilities, processing plants, transmission pipelines, compressor stations, LNG export or import terminals, storage facilities and distribution networks. Together these assets move gas from supply sources to power plants, industries and communities.
Gas infrastructure supports the energy transition by providing flexible, reliable energy while lower-carbon technologies scale. Many gas systems can also be adapted over time to transport lower-carbon fuels such as hydrogen or renewable natural gas, helping energy systems evolve while maintaining reliability.
