Expanding reliable power generation for growing demand in Texas

Adding a nominal 217-megawatt natural gas unit for the benefit of Golden Spread Electric Cooperative customers
Elk Unit 4
Energy & Power

Electric demand across Texas continues to grow, increasing pressure on generation assets to deliver reliable, flexible power. For Golden Spread Electric Cooperative (GSEC), expanding generation at its existing Elk Station in Abernathy, TX offered a strategic opportunity to strengthen supply while leveraging existing infrastructure.

The Elk Unit 4 expansion will add a nominal 217-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired simple-cycle combustion turbine integrated into the current plant systems. By adding new capacity within the existing facility footprint, GSEC can better respond to peak demand and maintain grid stability while maximizing the value of its current generating assets for customers.

Key equipment includes

  • Combustion turbine generator
  • Generator step-up transformer
  • Station service transformer
  • Circuit breakers
  • Distributed control system.

Jacobs serves as Owner’s Engineer, providing project management, document control and technical oversight while assisting procurement and contractor selection.

We’re leading the development of the technical package for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) request for proposal, supporting the procurement of long-lead equipment and evaluating contractor submissions to ensure the best technical solution for the project. During delivery, Jacobs will oversee engineering design and construction while providing field engineering, quality assurance and commissioning support.

By combining deep power generation experience with hands-on project oversight, we’re enabling the move from development to delivery with greater confidence — supporting a new generation asset designed to strengthen reliability and meet the region’s growing power needs.
