As the U.K.’s former center of fast reactor research and development and Scotland's largest nuclear clean-up and demolition project, the Dounreay nuclear site is one of the most complex nuclear decommissioning programs in Europe. The nature of many of its redundant facilities means the clean-up and demolition requires innovation as well as great care. Building on our more than two decades’ experience supporting Dounreay, we understand the complexity and the many facets that make this site challenging.
decades of experience at Dounreay
years in operation as U.K.'s center of fast reactor research and development of nuclear energy
This is a complex and significant program of work which is central to our shared vision with Dounreay Site Restoration Limited to make the site and surrounding area safe and clean for future generations.
In Focus: Dounreay
The nature of many of its redundant facilities means the cleanup and demolition requires innovation as well as great care. As a direct result of our partnering, major strides have been made in taking these facilities to a safer condition and benefitting residents throughout the area.
Through our framework agreements, we are also providing specialist design and engineering, environmental restoration and other services.
With Dounreay’s exotic fuel shipments project, we created specialist facilities for the air shipment of high-enriched uranium (HEU) from Dounreay to the U.S. to be downblended to low-enriched uranium for use in power generation. We created a suite of bespoke gloveboxes within a purpose-built seismically qualified structure inside an existing facility.
Together, we’re working to ensure operations are conducted safely and in a way that protects people and the environment – returning these facilities to a safer condition for future generations and benefitting local communities. The skills and enterprise the program fosters are also giving Scottish companies an important platform to compete in the global decommissioning market.
