Delivering Accessible Rail Travel Coast to Coast
Advancing inclusive design at hundreds of Amtrak stations across the United States
Creating equitable rail travel
Jacobs, as part of a joint venture with AECOM, is serving as the program manager for one of the nation’s largest accessibility initiatives - modernizing more than 382 Amtrak stations across the country. For over a decade, we’ve guided the planning, design and construction of improvements that remove barriers and open travel opportunities for all passengers.
This work spans across stations directly under Amtrak’s control, with enhancements including upgraded signage, passenger information displays and modifications to facilities. Our approach emphasizes collaboration with local, state and federal agencies to ensure solutions reflect real community needs.
Advancing inclusive infrastructure
Our role began with assisting Amtrak in the successful delivery and implementation of its fast-tracked American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which set the foundation for long-term accessibility improvements nationwide. Building on this success, Amtrak extended our contract to include the nationwide Americas with Disabilities Act of 1990 where we provide a broad range of program and construction management services and design oversight including accessibility assessments, design and construction management.
Through detailed site assessments, we developed strategies to meet updated accessibility standards. These improvements help ensure stations meet the highest levels of safety, equity and functionality.
“Accessibility is about creating an environment where every passenger feels included and supported. By working closely with Amtrak and the disability community, we are making rail travel equitable and seamless for everyone.”
Coordinating across complex rail networks
Delivering accessibility at stations across the country requires coordination with multiple stakeholders, from freight railroads and municipal agencies to state historic preservation offices. We work closely with all parties to meet design standards, gain necessary approvals and keep projects on schedule and within budget.
By aligning requirements early and fostering consensus among stakeholders, Jacobs is helping Amtrak deliver upgrades that strengthen compliance, improve efficiency and enhance passenger experience nationwide.
