Located on the original site of the former government CSL established in 1916, this project involved the refurbishment and extension of the original 1963 Administration Building, designed by Bates Smart and McCutcheon (BSM). In almost original condition after five decades, the building no longer functioned adequately for global business.
Jacobs’ design response honors the strong modernist language established by BSM. Three veiled, structurally independent ‘pods’ accessed by glazed walkways minimize the impact on the original structure.
CSL’s incredible advancement in blood technologies is echoed in the resulting architecture as an abstract structure of plasma proteins applied to the glass curtain walls.
