Ireland’s rail network is vital to connecting communities and supporting regional economic growth, yet rising demand, constrained capacity and ambitious climate targets are placing increasing strain on existing infrastructure. Without intervention, journey reliability, network efficiency and sustainable mobility goals are at risk.
To address this, Irish Rail is advancing a program to upgrade and expand an 87-mile corridor linking Galway to Portarlington, with onward connections to Dublin. By increasing track capacity and reducing journey times on a corridor already supporting more than 2.5 million passenger journeys each year, the program enables a step change in how people move across the region.
The result is faster, more reliable and lower-carbon journeys, strengthening connections between communities, supporting economic opportunity and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
We are serving as a multi-disciplinary advisor in the early stages of the program, delivering pre-feasibility, feasibility and preferred option selection to guide Irish Rail’s investment decisions. We are assessing options to increase capacity, enhance speeds and enable electrification, integrating transport planning, environmental assessment and stakeholder engagement.
By defining a preferred approach that balances performance, sustainability and deliverability, we help reduce risk and accelerate decision-making at a critical stage. This work establishes a clear, future-ready pathway for a more resilient, efficient and lower-carbon rail network—enabling better journeys for passengers and stronger connectivity across Ireland’s regions.
