Nigel has over 27 years’ experience in coastal geomorphology and management, spanning estuaries, saltmarshes, sand and gravel beaches, and aeolian dunes. He has delivered coastal projects worldwide covering dunes, reefs, beach recharge, marsh restoration and grey infrastructure enhancement — including supporting over 1,700 hectares of new wetland habitat and some of the largest restoration projects undertaken in the UK.  

Nigel has authored more than 300 reports and over 115 publications, including book chapters, journal and conference papers. He has contributed to key nature-based solutions guidance for organizations including the World Bank, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and England’s Environment Agency.   

Nigel serves on industry panels for the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.K. Joint Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management R&D Programme, and the U.K. Blue Carbon Forum. Nigel is also a visiting professor at the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton) and chairs the PIANC (World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure) working group on blue carbon.
