How KL International Airport Aerotrain is enabling seamless transfers from main terminal to satellite building
KL International Airport (KLIA) is Malaysia’s premier aviation gateway, connecting millions of travelers worldwide. Since opening in 1998, the airport’s aerotrain system has played a vital role in helping passengers move quickly and comfortably between the main terminal and satellite building.
To enhance the passenger experience and reinforce KLIA’s status as a top regional hub, Malaysia Airports launched an ambitious modernization of its 24-year-old automated people mover (APM) system.
An upgraded train system at KLIA
Jacobs was appointed as the project management consultant (PMC) for the KLIA aerotrain system. The upgraded system was officially launched on July 1, 2025.
The aerotrain now connects the airport’s main terminal to the international satellite building in under three minutes, carrying up to 270 passengers per trip. This new system delivers faster, more reliable, and more comfortable transfers for international travelers with tight connections.
As PMC, Jacobs brought extensive project management and technical expertise to this infrastructure upgrade project. We led critical phases of the project, from planning and design to testing and commissioning. This included reviewing technical engineering documents, supervising on-site installation and testing and supporting the stringent regulatory process to ensure a safe and successful system handover.

Jacobs worked with Malaysia Airports to assess the APM’s remaining lifespan and develop the replacement strategy, and we’re pleased to have supported them in renewing this key airport asset. The APM is helping create a positive first impression for international visitors arriving in Kuala Lumpur. It’s improving connectivity and reliability for travelers moving through the airport, while enhancing their travel experience, helping establish KLIA as a modern transportation hub in the Asia region.
