As St. Louis Lambert International Airport advances a comprehensive master plan to modernize its terminals and airfield infrastructure, clearing space for future development is a critical first step. For decades, the airport’s airfield maintenance and operations teams have been housed in nine pre‑engineered buildings that are more than 70 years old and increasingly vulnerable to flooding. These facilities are nearing the end of their useful life and occupy land needed for future airside projects.

The new maintenance complex addresses both immediate operational needs and long‑term strategic goals. Designed by Jacobs, the project consolidates airfield operations, landside and airside landscaping operations, maintenance and logistics and materials management into a purpose‑built complex that enables the demolition of existing structures and unlocks future development opportunities, including a new deicing pad and central utility plant.

Designing a consolidated operations complex

Originally planned for 16 acres, the maintenance complex has expanded to 35 acres to support current and future operational demands. The complex includes two facilities totaling approximately 285,000 square feet and brings all airfield maintenance functions into a single, coordinated environment.

The main building serves as the operational and administrative hub, housing office suites and essential personnel support spaces such as locker rooms, training rooms, conference spaces, breakrooms and kitchens. Light and heavy‑duty vehicle maintenance bays are co‑located with vehicle parts storage to streamline workflows and improve response times. Materials management is centralized within the building to support warehousing, delivery and distribution across the entire airport, improving efficiency and visibility for core operations. Dedicated shop spaces support landscaping operations, with exterior areas designed for material deliveries, plant growth and ongoing maintenance activities.

The second building in the complex functions as a secure vehicle garage, protecting critical service equipment that was previously stored outdoors. The facility includes two wash bays and a series of specialized shops, including welding, painting and woodworking, to support ongoing maintenance and repair needs.

Beyond operational efficiency, the complex is designed to provide a modern, high-quality work environment for airfield operations staff. Purpose-built support spaces, improved safety conditions and contemporary amenities create a workplace that reflects the critical role these teams play — enabling the airport to attract, retain and support a highly-skilled workforce.

Ancillary infrastructure such as a fuel island and canopy, salt and sand storage and a control booth for monitoring access between landside and secure airside areas ensures the complex is fully self‑contained and operationally efficient. A key focus of the program is providing modern storage and service environments for the airport’s runway snow removal fleet, directly supporting airfield safety and winter operations.

Enabling the airport’s next phase

More than a standalone facility, the maintenance complex is a critical enabler of Lambert’s long‑term transformation. Relocating airfield operations allows the airport to safely demolish aging structures and proceed with major utility and airside investments that underpin its future terminal program.

Jacobs worked closely with the City of St. Louis and subconsultant organizations to exceed expectations in the delivery of a design that balances operational continuity, constructability and future flexibility.

Scheduled for construction completion in fall 2026, the maintenance complex strengthens the airport’s ability to operate reliably in challenging conditions. The new complex also represents a strategic investment in people. By delivering a state-of-the-art facility that prioritizes safety, functionality and employee wellbeing, the airport positions itself as a competitive employer while strengthening workforce continuity that’s critical to long-term operational reliability.

By replacing flood prone, inefficient structures with a consolidated, elevated and purpose designed complex, the project enhances safety for staff, protects critical assets and ensures that St. Louis Lambert International Airport remains a resilient and dependable transportation hub for the U.S. Midwest region.
