The U.K.’s grid is evolving fast, but much of its infrastructure needs to catch up. Without intervention, asset failures could disrupt supply and slow progress toward net-zero. National Grid’s Asset Health Intervention Programme addresses this risk through large-scale replacement and refurbishment of critical substation equipment across multiple regions.

The program includes more than 800 asset interventions — from circuit breakers and transformers to surge arresters — delivered on live networks where reliability can’t be compromised. By standardizing designs and scaling delivery, the program is transforming how asset renewal is executed, reducing disruption and improving efficiency to ensure the network can meet future energy needs with greater resilience.

Jacobs is the sole supplier across three regions, delivering detailed design, design assurance, data collection and construction support in close collaboration with National Grid’s operational teams. Working on live assets, our teams are enabling safe, efficient interventions while maintaining network performance.

Through our Global Integrated Delivery model, we’re combining local U.K. teams with global design capabilities, scaling delivery while maintaining consistency and quality. We’re applying digital tools, automation and standardized design approaches to accelerate execution across a high volume of upgrades.

The result is a repeatable, efficient model for asset renewal, one that strengthens network resilience, improves delivery certainty and supports National Grid in maintaining a secure, reliable electricity supply as the U.K. transitions to a low-carbon future.
