Protecting the Thames Estuary: Modeling to provide a reliable evidence base to safeguard millions of residents and billions in assets

The Thames Estuary is home to 1.51 million people and more than £400 ($546) billion-worth of assets that are at risk from tidal flooding. To address this challenge, Jacobs and JBA Consulting are leading the Thames Estuary 2100 Modelling Project for the Environment Agency — a key pillar of the Thames Estuary 2100 strategy. The project strengthens understanding of flood risk and provides the robust evidence base needed to guide smarter decisions that protect homes, safeguard critical infrastructure and support sustainable growth. By delivering trusted and unified insights for climate resilience, it’s helping to build a safer future for one of the principal development areas in southern England.

Zooming In On The "S" in ESG

Focus on long-term return essential to unlock investment in social value, says Urban Land Institute report

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has launched a new report, Zooming in on the “S” in ESG: A road map for social value in real estate, to guide the industry on incorporating social value into corporate strategy, business practices and even investment theory. ULI is a global, member-driven organization comprising more than 45,000 real estate and urban development professionals dedicated to shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. ULI highlights that business leaders and investors across all industries increasingly acknowledge their role in tackling environmental and social problems and meeting the challenge of sustainable development. However, so far, most attention has been focused on environmental issues and the risks and opportunities associated with mitigating climate change rather than focusing on social factors. The report confirms, through global surveys, a growing interest in the social dimensions of sustainable development and the key concept of social value. Alongside this interest has come the rise of impact investing – investing with the intention of contributing to tackling social or environmental challenges or both while generating a financial return. In the meantime, there is no shared understanding of what it is in the real estate industry, nor a common approach to describing and measuring social value, with an increasing number of frameworks, tools, and methods designed to support social value or impact measurement and reporting, that can be difficult to navigate. The report identifies six key barriers based on a survey of and interviews with senior real estate

DALLAS, March 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs (NYSE: J) has been appointed as the lead consultant, on behalf of the McBains consortium, for the Design and Placemaking Development Partner commission for the West Yorkshire Mass Transit program, being developed by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). The McBains Consortium (including partners Jacobs, Pell Frischmann, Egis, Re-form Landscape Architecture, Fore Consulting and Gattica Associates) was appointed through the Crown Commercial Services Project Management & Full Design Team Services Framework RM3741, and will support the Combined Authority in turning its Mass Transit vision into future-made designs that better connect West Yorkshire's most important places, help combat climate change, support a green and inclusive recovery, and improve health and wellbeing for residents as part of rebalancing of the U.K. economy. Jacobs' work as development partner on this program will focus on ensuring feasible options are developed on all corridors to unlock the full scale of benefits such a system can bring to the region. "Our approach is focused around integrated, zero-carbon and place-based solutions that will not only benefit West Yorkshire, but also ensure that Mass Transit acts as a key enabler to unlock the regeneration and inclusive growth potential across the region as part of the Combined Authority's overall Connectivity Plan," said Jacobs People & Places Solutions Senior Vice President Europe and Digital
