Jacobs achieves net zero carbon emissions and 100% renewable energy
DALLAS, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- In advance of the Climate Ambition Summit this Saturday, December 12, marking the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, Jacobs (NYSE:J) has fulfilled its commitment to transition to 100% renewable energy for its operations in 2020 and achieved net-zero carbon emissions for its operations and business travel in 2020. These milestones and other key objectives were outlined earlier this year in Jacobs' first Climate Action Plan to help address the climate crisis. Jacobs has also published carbon reduction targets to cover Scope 3 (indirect emissions) and these have been approved by the Science Based Target Initiative. "Reaching our goal to become carbon neutral is a major step in improving the way we run our operations at Jacobs," said Jacobs Chair and CEO Steve Demetriou. "And our biggest opportunity to affect climate change is through the work performed for our clients – helping them to achieve change and create a better tomorrow for all. Together, we are pushing the limits of what is possible and staying ahead to create the new standards of our future." Jacobs achieved carbon neutrality for its operations and business travel in 2020, in line with global standard PAS 2060:2014, by reducing its carbon consumption and neutralizing remaining carbon impact by purchasing renewable energy and carbon offsets. Jacobs anticipates that its renewable energy and carbon offset purchases will diminish each year as it continually reduces its direct and indirect emissions. Jacobs is also committed to becoming carbon negative for its operations
How the power of data is enabling strategic decisions on pavement investments
Worldwide, unprecedented challenges like COVID-19, are making organizations across all sectors take a closer look at how they can maximize their investments and improve their efficiency to stay competitive. As the aviation industry faces the new pressures of the pandemic, countless airports are having to adapt their future investment plans. Find out how we’re unlocking value for airports by harnessing the power of data to help them to make optimal strategic decisions about their airfield investment. Airfield pavements and runways are the single most critical asset at an airport but are extremely hard to manage. It can be difficult to predict how pavements will behave in the future, to know what interventions are needed, when and where – balancing engineering needs with commercial goals to maximize return on investment. Increasingly, these assets must perform better, last longer, and be maintained more easily and cost efficiently. A step change for the better A collaboration between Jacobs and Parallel Works, Flood Cloud integrates Jacobs’ industry-leading 1D and 2D Flood Modeller solvers with the Parallel Works platform and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform and Amazon AWS, to provide an innovative cloud-based platform that allows organizations to act faster and more efficiently. How integrated catchment modelling improves our understanding of flood risk in urban areas
With flooding being a concern for most places on earth and flood frequency predicted to increase across 42% of Earth’s land regions by the end of the century, integrated catchment modelling is a key element of most flood risk management responses. Computational flood modelling has been in use for more than 50 years. Historically, flood modelling would only assess the impacts of flooding from river systems. This resulted in the misrepresentation of flood risk as the link between surface and subsurface flows wasn’t considered. An unrealistic assessment of flood risk can lead to catastrophic consequences that could cost significant amounts in terms of infrastructure, but also lives. With technological advancements, this understanding of how different flood mechanisms affect the whole catchment has evolved. What if we showed you how Flood Modeller, our industry-leading river, floodplain and urban drainage modelling software, offers an integrated catchment modelling solution, all within a single environment? $40B in flood damage annually around the world 42% increase in flood frequency predicted by 2100 Urban areas worldwide are seeing an increased frequency of extreme, high-intensity storm events that cause severe flooding. Historic practices of filling natural waterways have reduced overland flow opportunities and increased the risk to public health and safety. Integrated catchment modelling allows engineers to understand surface flow dynamics and enables visualization techniques for a wide audience “see” the problem. This enables collaborative planning and design of resilient blue-green flood mitigation solutions that work with the neighborhood fabric. Elise Ibendahl Jacobs Flood Modelling & Planning

How heroic Jacobs operators rebuilt their little free library
You may have seen them in your neighborhood – those cabinets where people can take books they’ve read, or never got around to reading, and trade them for other books. The Little Free Library movement is 100,000 strong worldwide, and seeks to build community, spark creativity and inspire readers. Well, one of our Little Free Libraries recently became its own story about rising from the ashes. A few years ago, led by Assistant Project Manager Andy Warmus, our community-minded Jacobs operators at the Village of Carol Stream, Illinois joined the movement and built a Little Free Library on the property of the Village’s Water Reclamation Center (WRC.) We’ve been running Carol Stream’s WRC for more than two decades, and we’re always looking for ways to connect with the residents we serve. Neighbors enjoyed sharing books and the library was a hit. That is, until one day in early October when our sweet little library somehow burned to the ground. We don’t know quite how that happened, but the important thing, as in all stories, is what happened next. Original Little Free Library built by our team in Carol Stream, Illinois The new and improved Little Free Library, complete with our "J-mark" Not to be discouraged by the charred books and smoldering remnants, our Jacobs team set about rebuilding the library better and stronger.
