What inspired you to pursue an environmental career?
I grew up surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Sintra, Portugal, where the ocean meets the mountains. From a young age, I developed a passion for plants, trees and the creatures living there. I became conscious of the need to preserve them, which led me study environmental engineering and focus my career on environmental impact assessments.
Over the following 10 years, I was privileged to work across sectors and continents, gaining insight into the similarities and differences in environments, cultures and people.
What has driven you to work in climate mitigation and carbon management?
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity, impacting water, food and biodiversity. Solving it demands a shift in how we live—and the creation of innovative solutions.
When I joined Jacobs in 2022, I saw an opportunity to use my skills and experience to focus on carbon management and lean engineering for infrastructure. I’m grateful to be part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to finding innovative approaches and new ways of doing things. I’m constantly learning, adapting and evolving — that keeps me motivated.
How do you think you are making a difference in your role?
I believe I can positively influence the sustainability and carbon outcomes of the projects I’m involved in. I enjoy challenging teams to improve solutions and helping clients define and meet their NZC targets. I find my work on business strategy especially rewarding, helping clients define and deliver their NCZ targets.
Over the past two years, I’ve worked in the water and environment sectors as the NZC Implementation Lead for the Environment Agency’s Eastern Hub. My focus was on embedding carbon management across the flood and coastal risk management capital program and helping our client to meet their NZC goals. The Agency aims to protect households and businesses from flooding while delivering sustainable infrastructure with the lowest possible carbon emissions.
I led the introduction of the new carbon management process and tools to project teams and supported them in reducing carbon through innovative materials and techniques—ensuring alignment with PAS 2080:2023 standards. I also helped develop and implement actions from the Hub Decarbonization Plan to apply low-carbon solutions to key assets and projects within the Framework.
It was incredibly rewarding to collaborate with diverse teams from the Environment Agency, Jacobs and other contributors. I’m proud of the feedback received and excited to keep driving meaningful progress toward net zero.
If you aren’t working, what are we most likely to find you doing?
Outdoors! I love walking in the forest and visiting beautiful gardens. And when I’m inside, I’m probably cooking—I enjoy experimenting with new recipes.
