Fleet owners worldwide are under pressure to decarbonize their operations, and shifting to zero-emissions vehicles is a key element of this effort. Some fleet owners have already begun the journey toward a green fleet. In the United States, more than 200 transit agencies are already operating, ordering or have received funding for zero-emissions vehicles. ​

Many other fleet owners, cities, or states  have set targets for transportation decarbonization, and others are only now beginning to consider how to complete this transformation.  ​

Operators face significant technical and market challenges, and owners may be challenged by the vision and coordination needed to successfully transition to green. Transportation decarbonization will require a fundamental rebalancing of the energy environment, development of new supply chains, and significant investment in hard infrastructure and workforce development. Careful planning will be needed to realize a green fleet future, whether for a big city transit agency or a small-town municipal fleet. ​

  • Vehicles

    Zero-emissions vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, and you have an operation to run. You need to know what product offerings exist and how reliable they are. How quickly should you be moving to replace your fleet? How can you set up a pilot program to most effectively educate your organization on these new vehicles?

  • Sustainability & equity

    Converting to zero-emissions generates a suite of community benefits that should be quantified and articulated to help develop a more complete understanding of the program impacts. Workforce development and local contracting opportunities can drive investment in communities, while pollutant and noise reduction improve local quality of life.

Working on the NJ TRANSITGRID project, the first-of-its-kind in the United States for public transportation, we’re helping design a microgrid capable of powering transit infrastructure supporting rail systems; providing reliable power even during critical times when the regional electric grid may be compromised due to storms or other events.

A Better City New MBTA Bus Maintenance Facilities & Evolving Battery Electric Bus Technology

In 2019, Jacobs led an effort assessing the potential to incorporate a battery-electric bus maintenance facility into a new mixed-use development project. Working alongside A Better City, a diverse business group made up of leaders focused on improving quality of life in the greater Boston region, Jacobs provided consideration of a new procurement concept aimed at helping the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) replace one of its bus facilities at no or low public cost.
