Jacobs' industry-leading teammates will be in Minneapolis, MN for MAASTO 2025 to elevate solutions and innovations to the complex, interconnected challenges of transportation today. Explore our participation below.

August 26

  • Hey, your bridge is on fire!
    11:30 AM - 12:20 PM
    GreenWay Ballroom B,C,H,I

What happens when a fire at a city playground erupts into a blaze that causes crippling damage to a key interstate artery? From the fury of melted steel that forced the bridge’s closure to the disruption that plunged multiple cities into a traffic nightmare, this presentation, from Ohio Department of Transportation's Kathleen Fuller and moderated by Jacobs' Doug Stachler, unpacks the chaos surrounding the closure of the I-471/Daniel Carter Beard Bridge between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Newport, Kentucky and how we responded.

  • Minnesota Electric Aviation Network MEAN Study Findings
    11:30 AM - 12:20 PM
    GreenWay Ballroom D,E,F,G

In this session, moderated by Jacobs' Marie Glynn, Minnesota Department of Transportation's Joseph Block will share the results of the Minnesota Electric Aviation Network, or MEAN, Study. The MEAN Study aims to create a strategic network of airports in Minnesota well- positioned to support electric aircraft operations in the next five to ten years. The presentation will cover stakeholder outreach and engagement, data collection, study methodology and presentation of the final MEAN network.

  • Innovative Electrification in the Right of Way
    4:00 PM - 4:50 PM
    GreenWay Ballroom D,E,F,G

Electrification is advancing transportation infrastructure with groundbreaking technologies like static and dynamic in-pavement wireless charging. MDOT is at the forefront of this transformation, piloting solutions to support electric public transit, shuttles and last-mile delivery fleets. In this session, Jacobs' Andrew Wolpert and Don Linford of ASPIRE NSF Engineering RC will explore the opportunities and challenges of implementing wireless charging systems, with insights from MDOT’s collaborations with industry leaders and researchers. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the benefits, including improved vehicle efficiency, reduced range anxiety and expanded electrification options.

August 27

  • Surface Condition for Active Networks SCAN - an approach to shared use path condition assessment
    8:30 AM - 9:20 AM
    Regency Room

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)'s newly drafted SCAN manual is intended to help planners and engineers assess and rate the surface condition of asphalt shared use paths by identifying the presence or absence of various surface defects. This presentation, given by MDOT's Kole Nicholoff and moderated by Jacobs' Lisa Laws, will outline some of these challenges that led to the creation of the SCAN manual, present the SCAN approach, and solicit discussion on implementation and other agencies experiences with active transportation networks surface condition assessments.

  • Examination of Lighting Practices at Crosswalks
    1:00 PM - 1:50 PM
    Northstar A

Lighting and visibility are important components of a safety strategy for pedestrians, with approximately 73% of pedestrian fatal crashes in Michigan occurring at dark conditions from 2011-2020. Looking to address these types of crashes, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) funded a research project on crosswalk lighting to determine best practices, cost and effectiveness while complying with Michigan State law. This session, moderated by Jacobs' Shawn Thompson and given by MDOT's Tim Smedon, will be a summary of the final report and its findings.

  • Equity Based Approach for Prioritizing Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Safety Needs
    2:00 PM - 2:50 PM
    Northstar A

This session, presented by Jacobs' Kim Kolody and moderated by Justine Sydello of CDM Smith, will cover a promising approach for advancing safety efforts focused on pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Jacobs is also sponsoring the closing session panel at MAASTO and our own Melissa Savage will be introducing the panel participants.
