Metrolinx Transit Implementation

The largest public investment in Canadian history is poised to connect communities and commuters in greater Toronto.

With one of the most ambitious transit expansion programs in North America and the largest public investment in Canadian history, the Metrolinx Transit Program is poised to connect communities and commuters in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) – one of Canada’s most populated and vibrant urban regions – which is growing by an average of 100,000 people each year.

With a complex web of deliverables and interconnected dependencies, more than 40 of Jacobs’ brightest and brainiest experts are helping Metrolinx uncover the right solutions so transit riders will have access to the best possible transit and transportation network when the project is complete in 2022. That’s critical for our client, so it’s top of mind for us.

We’ve been partnering with Metrolinx since 2010, and right now, we’re providing owner’s engineer and program management services for three new light rail transit lines including vehicle maintenance facilities. Working together with Metrolinx in an integrated team, we’re helping to establish a precedent for how a Canadian municipality can tackle large and complex infrastructure programs.

Transit and Rail

With a legacy of delivering transit and rail projects worldwide, we’re proud to partner with Metrolinx to bring major changes to the way people in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area commute. Our multidisciplinary rail experts are assisting with light rail vehicle procurement, tunneling and more.

Program Management

Our team is committed to fostering a strong sense of collaboration and direct communication in everyday operations, and we approached the program’s complexity with customized project controls and contract management tools to coordinate various transit methods, sites, contractors and stakeholders.

Community impact

With a population of more than 6 million, like many booming metroplexes, the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is growing rapidly, adding an average of 100,000 people each year. To accommodate its expanding population and provide relief to congested roadways, the Metrolinx Transit program will allow commuters easier and quicker access to everything Toronto has to offer.

Delivering Canada’s largest public transit program

Partnering with Metrolinx, we’re managing one of the most ambitious public transit undertakings in Canadian history.

Metrolinx is one of the most ambitious transit expansion programs in North America and the largest public investment in Canadian history.

With an ever-increasing population in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Metrolinx’s Transit Program is poised to connect communities and commuters, giving riders easy and convenient access to the best possible transit and transportation network when the project is complete in 2022.

The ambitious program includes three primary components:

  1. Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit: Will add 19 kilometers (12 miles) of new transit from Mount Dennis (Weston Road) to Kennedy Station.
  2. Finch West Light Rail Transit: Will add 11 kilometers (7 miles) of new transit along Finch Avenue from the planned Finch West subway station at Keele Street to Humber College.
  3. York Viva Bus Rapid Transit: More than 34 kilometers (21 miles) of planned routes will provide reliable and more frequent service, connections with GO Transit, regional transit and future subway system extensions.

The complex transit initiative requires a dedicated, experienced team. Serving in the role of owner’s engineer and providing program management services since 2010, we recently received a five-year contract extension to continue our delivery partnership with Metrolinx.

Our technical experts are helping lead and support numerous program management components including coordination and reporting, cost estimation and control, change control, contract management, engineering design support, light rail vehicle procurement and more.
