Submersible Remotely Operated Vehicles for Radiation Monitoring

Applying a mix of appropriate technologies to tackle a complex challenge, we’ve made radiation monitoring of storage ponds safer and more accurate by using specially adapted remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

In an innovative project for a nuclear site, we devised a way to speed up the sampling process and minimize human intervention, while still obtaining the highest quality results.

A submersible ROV collects samples of water before docking at a custom-built monitoring station floating at the side of the pond, where the sample is analyzed underwater by a gamma radiation spectrometer. This enables real time readings, with sampling and monitoring performed remotely.
