Lead in Drinking Water: Identifying Galvanized Services Lines Requiring Replacement

We’ve co-authored a white paper with BlueConduit discussing best practices for identifying galvanized services lines that require replacement under the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR).

The Lead and Copper Rule Revisions require water systems in the U.S. to inventory their service line materials and develop replacement plans to prevent lead contamination of drinking water.

Replacement requirements cover two categories of service lines: lead service lines and “galvanized requirement replacement”. The latter category refers to galvanized steel lines that are, or ever were, downstream of a lead service line. If a water system is unable to demonstrate that a galvanized line was never downstream of a lead service line, then it’s also categorized as galvanized requirement replacement.

To help water systems with the process of identifying galvanized service lines that require replacement, we’ve worked with water analytics company BlueConduit to develop a white paper that discusses best practices and methodologies.

Topics discussed in the paper include:

  • Federal and State agency guidance.
  • Historical records review.
  • Visual inspection of service line materials.
  • Water quality sampling.
  • Predictive modeling.
  • Creating digital records.
  • Leveraging existing funding options.
