Northgate Link Light Rail, Seattle, Washington

Quickening commutes around the University of Washington

Northgate Link construction in front of Husky Stadium

The Northgate Link Extension Project is a 4.3 mile extension of the Link light rail system from the University of Washington Station near Husky Stadium to just south of the Northgate mall. It consists of a double track configuration with approximately 3.2 miles in twin-bored tunnels with two cut and cover stations serving the University District (U-District Station) and the Roosevelt neighborhoods (Roosevelt Station).

Integrated with Sound Transit, Jacobs is providing day to day contract administration for all the NLINK construction contracts, including overall project management, resident engineering and the full range of construction management services for the tunnels and stations civil works contracts.

We are currently in year seven of the program and remain ahead of schedule and under budget. There were significant challenges in the mining due to the aggressive and highly variable nature of the ground conditions. These were successfully overcome through a series of innovative technical solutions which can now become part of our "tool box" for future projects.

The Northgate Link Extension Project will connect Sound Transit’s University Link light rail segment to the Northgate business/retail center in Seattle, Washington.

The project will complete a system connecting three major urban centers to University Link and Central Link (which extend from University of Washington through downtown Seattle to SeaTac airport). It consists of 4.3 miles (6.9 kilometers) of double-track light rail, 3.2 miles (5.6 kilometers) of which will be in twin bored soft-ground tunnels, and 0.6 miles (0.9 kilometers) of which will be in retained cuts fills and elevated structures.

The project includes two underground transit stations (U District and Roosevelt), one elevated station (Northgate), a portal structure and 23 cross passages.
