CH2M HILL Congratulates Port Columbus International Airport on Runway Commissioning

Columbus, Ohio. CH2M HILL joined Elaine Roberts, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and Michael Huerta, Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, to celebrate the opening of the Port Columbus International Airport’s relocated Runway 10R/28L.

“This is the largest capital project in our history,” said Roberts. “Port Columbus International Airport is a key transportation hub for connecting Central Ohio with the world. With the opening of our new runway, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority is continuing its commitment to providing passengers, businesses and the community the highest level of service, safety, satisfaction and economic benefit.”

CH2M HILL, a global full service consulting, engineering, construction and operations firm, played a significant role as the design partner for the entire project, which was finished on schedule and under original budget. The scope of work included replacing the airport’s previous south runway with a new 10,113-foot-long by 150-foot-wide modernized runway complex. A parallel taxiway and associated entrance, exit and high-speed exit taxiways connect the new facility to the existing airfield, while the former south runway, which includes sections of original 1928 pavement, will be converted to a taxiway after the new runway opens.

“CH2M HILL is proud to be part of the successful collaboration that has brought the Runway 10R/28L replacement from concept to completion,” said CH2M HILL’s Transportation Business Group President Terry Ruhl. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Columbus Regional Airport Authority as they invest in the future of their aviation business and the local economy.”

With a focus on sustainability, CH2M HILL’s design included the recycling of approximately 184,000 cubic yards of materials; the installation of all light-emitting diodes (LED)-lamped airfield lighting and signage on the entire south airfield that reduced power usage by 60 percent; and the optimization of earthen waste material within the project site that minimized truck hauling on public roads and reduced fuel consumption. This is the first all LED-lamped runway complex in the U.S.

The three-year, $140 million capital program is one of several major airport improvement initiatives designed to position Port Columbus International Airport for long-term growth.
