CH2M HILL collaborates with WBCSD, IPIECA and EDF to develop oil and gas, and power versions of popular water saving device

The Global Water Tool, developed in 2007 by CH2M HILL for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, now has new, customized versions created for oil and gas companies and power utilities. The tools will be launched during World Water Week in Stockholm on Tues., Aug. 23 at the WBCSD booth.

IPIECA, the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, in collaboration with WBCSD and CH2M HILL, have developed the IPIECA Global Water Tool for Oil and Gas.  The tool is a customized version of the free and easy-to-use Global Water Tool. The tool will allow oil and gas companies to map their water use and assess risks for their overall global portfolio of sites considering each part of the oil and gas value chain. The tool will allow users to consider factors such as what percentage of its production volume is in water-scarce areas, how many refineries are in water-scarce areas and at greatest risks, as well as how many sites are in countries that lack access to improved water sanitation. The tool will be available to download on the IPIECA website beginning Sept. 1.

“The Global Water Tool provides a great partnership opportunity between IPIECA and WBCSD.  It enables oil and gas companies to assess water risk across their global portfolio more effectively,” says Rob Cox, IPIECA Acting Executive Secretary.

Joppe Cramwinckel, Director Water, WBCSD, said: “We are pleased to be using World Water Week as the platform from which to launch these new additions to our Water Tool series. For the first time, tools dealing with complex water issues, in relation to very specific industry sectors, are available. And they deal with some of the world’s largest industries.”

The Global Water Tool for Power Utilities was developed by CH2M HILL and EDF with input from power companies worldwide. The tool allows power companies to customize data input and metric output for the four main types of power production as well as create sector-relevant intensity metrics.

“The Global Water Tool has been increasingly recognized as the best available approach for companies to assess corporate water-related risks, improve decision-making, shape water management plans, and strengthen communications with internal and external stakeholders on water issues,” says CH2M HILL Vice President Jan Dell. “With this new customization of the Global Water Tool, we are better able to address the specific needs of the oil, gas and power industries.”

Like the original Global Water Tool, the new Global Water Tools for oil and gas and power companies are free and web-based: www.wbcsd.org. The Global Water Tool is the globally accepted tool for use by companies to account for their water use within their operations, calculate their water metrics and identify their areas of high water risk through external mapping. It has been used by over 300 companies to report their water use. The tool is updated frequently – the most recent addition being Conservation International’s Biodiversity hotspots data. The improved functionalities make it more meaningful and easier to use.
