PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today that, together with MCA Group (MCA), it received significant industry recognition of its achievements on a project to extend the life of a large crude ore bin for Mt Isa Mines (a Glencore Company) in Queensland, Australia.
Jacobs and MCA received the Steel Excellence in Engineering Projects Award at the Australian Steel Institute’s 2014 Steel Excellence Awards for Queensland, Australia, as well as a Commendation in the Resource Development category at the Engineers Australia 2014 Engineering Excellence Awards for South Australia.
Jacobs, working in conjunction with MCA Group, refurbished Mt Isa Mines’ 60,000 tonne bin, built in 1972. Through long-time operation, the interior of the bin had been rendered inaccessible and had been partially filled with consolidated ore built up over many years. The bin did not operate at capacity and spillages occurred.
The integrated, multidisciplinary project team of Jacobs, MCA Group and Mt Isa Mines executed engineering and project management services in Adelaide, South Australia; fabrication in Parkes, New South Wales; and construction at Mt Isa Mines in Queensland.
Safety was a major focus of the project team, with not a single lost time incident recorded during the life of the project. Other highlights of the project included the installation of 3,100m2 of steel wear liner; the replacement of 36 rock boxes and feed chutes, plus 18 ‘Y’ chutes; and the overhaul of 36 vibrating feeders.
The project delivered significant improvements to the operational safety and efficiency of the bin. It is estimated that the bin’s lifespan has been increased by at least 10 years, while operational ore transfer capacity has been increased by approximately 300 per cent.
Upon making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Phil Lory stated, “We are proud to receive this recognition of the hard work, teamwork and commitment of the entire project team. Even more importantly, we are delighted that we helped achieve an excellent outcome for our client while maintaining an outstanding safety record, and ultimately a safer work environment for operations and maintenance personnel.”
MCA’s Director Andrew Pascoe added, “We are very proud to receive this acknowledgement. It reflects the hard work and dedication the whole project team put in. Working with Jacobs gave the detail to the design that was necessary; overall giving a very good resultant project for the client.”
