Jacobs Receives Contract for Transportation Study in The Netherlands

PASADENA, Calif., April 12, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that it is one of three transportation consultants to receive a contract from Werkmaatschappij Almere-Amsterdam (WAA) to develop a transportation concept study and business case for the IJmeerverbinding public transport corridor over the IJmeer (IJ-Lake) east of the City of Amsterdam. Jacobs is executing the project from its offices in London, England in partnership with Dutch management consultants APPM and design bureau POSAD.

Led by Jacobs, the team is asked by the government to develop a viable plan for a bridge crossing and a 33-kilometer metro line.

The team's final transportation concept study and business case is anticipated to be submitted to the City of Almere in September 2011 for subsequent public discussion. The preferred option is likely to incorporate best ideas from the three separate consortiums. It is to be presented to the Dutch federal cabinet in 2012.

The planned new corridor, named the "IJmeerlijn," links the City of Almere on IJ-Lake to Amsterdam, 15 kilometers to the southwest. Almere, which was founded only 30 years ago on manmade land in IJsselmeer Lake, is rapidly becoming The Netherlands' fifth largest city, with a projected population of up to 350,000 in 2030.

The IJmeerlijn is expected to be a vital part of the existing metro and heavy rail infrastructure in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Amsterdam is one of the growth centers of the Randstad, The Netherlands' economic base, which is comprised of the country's two western provinces. From there, the new corridor provides long-desired easy access for up to 55,000 passengers per day to Almere's expanding commercial, business and residential developments. The IJmeer connection is thus an important economic, social and cultural link within the region's urban, environmental and infrastructure development.
