PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that its subsidiary, Jacobs Engineering UK Ltd, has been appointed Principal Support Provider (PSP) for a major project by Defence Estates (DE), the property arm of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). The project will oversee new facilities at HM Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth for the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers (CVF) and the Daring Class destroyers (Type 45).
Jacobs' officials did not disclose the contract value.
The CVF, weighing approximately 65,000 tons, will be considerably larger than any surface warships that have previously been base ported at, or visited HMNB Portsmouth. The base requires major infrastructure improvements to accommodate the CVF including dredging, upgrading jetty and berthing facilities, shore services including electrical power, and providing shore support buildings such as lay-apart stores, marshalling areas, and transit routes. As a result of berthing the CVF, additional improvements are needed to enable the Type 45 to simultaneously berth at the base.
Jacobs' role as the PSP is to support Defence Estates in appointing a Prime Contactor for construction and then continuing to supervise the Prime Contractor. Duties will also include cost and business case support, maritime and civil engineering, dredging advice, environmental assessments, architecture and heritage, HV electrical, and quantity surveying.
In fulfilling the requirement, Jacobs will have a core team working alongside Defence Estates on site in Portsmouth supported through its extensive network of offices in the UK, providing a wide spectrum of engineering and management skills.
Defence Estates Project Manager Roger Pyke added, "The DE Project Team is delighted that Jacobs has demonstrated its ability to fulfill this highly important role on a project that is both high profile and of strategic significance to the future of UK Defence."
In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Allyn Taylor said: "This contract award further strengthens our position as a provider of independent technical support to the Ministry of Defence and we look forward to supporting Defence Estates to deliver the facilities for these flagship projects."
Defence Estates is a Ministry of Defence organization. On 1 April 2005 it was re-launched with responsibilities for managing the defence estate as a corporate asset on behalf of the MOD, and for the delivery of estate maintenance, works and services. Defence Estates assumed responsibility for the management and maintenance of the Service Families Accommodation estate in the mainland UK on 1 April 2004, following its merger with the Defence Housing Executive.
Jacobs, with over 57,000 employees and revenues exceeding $10.0 billion, provides technical, professional, and construction services globally.
