Jacobs Awarded Contract to Design Concept for Asteroid Capture System for NASA

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today it was awarded a Phase I contract for the conceptual design of an asteroid capture system for NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM). The ARM forms a critical part of NASA’s technology development plans for future human spaceflight operations and the overarching goal of a manned Mars mission.

The goal of this contract is to design a system capable of capturing and securing an asteroid as wide as 10 meters and as heavy as 1,000 metric tons. Jacobs’ concept uses a series of deployable booms that unfold and extend around the target asteroid. NASA is interested in the technology not only for ARM, but also for capture of unresponsive satellites or other large orbital debris.

This is one of four awards made by NASA for asteroid capture system concepts. Jacobs is constructing a physical model of the proposed design and demonstrating a successful capture using a simulated asteroid.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Robert Norfleet stated, "NASA is one of our most valued and longest enduring client relationships. We are proud to be selected for this significant project and look forward to the opportunity to continue building on our established relationship.”

Jacobs is one of the world's largest and most diverse providers of technical professional and construction services.
