Jacobs Early Careers Employee Reaches Finals of Global Student Challenge

Ross Campbell, part of Jacobs’ Energy Waste and Water business and graduand of Glasgow Caledonian University, is one quarter of a team that has reached the finals of a global competition run by the Chartered Institute of Building.

Jacobs’ Graduate Civil Engineer Ross Campbell is part of a team from Glasgow Caledonian University that is taking part in the Global Student Challenge, an annual competition run by the Chartered Institute of Building. The competition provides built environment students with an opportunity to apply their learning to a real-world scenario of running their own virtual construction company.

Universities from all over the world have been entering teams to compete in the Global Student Challenge since its inception in 2014. Glasgow Caledonian University entered two teams this year, including Glasgow Construction Corp., which is the team that Ross is part of.

After a grueling six rounds of competition that took place over six weeks, team Glasgow Construction Corp.’s performance earned them a place in the finals, which were due to be held in Sydney Australia at the end of June. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition will be completed remotely, with teams from around the globe competing from their homes.

Initially 48 teams entered the challenge, but only six will compete in the finals. Glasgow Construction Corp. is the only team from Europe to make it to the final round and will be joined by teams from universities in Hong Kong, Canada, China, Australia and Indonesia.

Ross is training as a civil engineer with Jacobs and has completed his university degree in Environmental Civil Engineering this semester. On earning a place in the finals, Ross said: “Taking part in the Global Student Challenge has been a great opportunity to put into practice everything I’ve learned at university and having practical experience through my work at Jacobs has definitely given me the skills I’ve needed to execute the tasks throughout the competition.”
