Jacobs’ Sellafield Team Finalist for the IChemE Global Awards 2017

Jacobs is shortlisted in the Industry Project Award category of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Awards 2017, for its work on the Sellafield First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP) Retrievals Project for the 2017. The IChemE Global Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and achievement in the chemical, process and biochemical industries. The Awards attracted 240 applications across 15 award categories this year, and the winners will be announced in November.

The Sellafield FGMSP is one of the world’s most technically-challenging environments, containing significant quantities of radioactive sludge and fuel. Jacobs has achieved repeated success by embracing new ways of working, focusing on collaboration, fit for purpose solutions, embracing innovation and a ‘right first time’ approach. The project installed a sludge retrieval and effluent system into the FGMSP which enabled the transfer of sludge to modern stainless steel containment. This is a hugely significant milestone for the U.K. nuclear industry. The work was completed safely for more than 3.3 million workhours and has left behind a legacy of learning, highly-skilled personnel and an enhanced supply-chain.
