Mentoring the Next Generation: A Q&A with Mark Hope

After almost 50 years’ experience in engineering, maintenance and project management, Mark Hope is giving back to the next generation of Jacobs managers by sharing his career and life lessons.

Q&A with Mark Hope Jacobs Coaching and Mentoring Lead

Hi Mark. Can you tell us about your role and how it helps us deliver critical solutions for our clients?

I'm mentoring several junior managers in Jacobs’s Aerospace and Joint Systems teams in Newcastle, New South Wales. My role focuses on   developing the Consulting & Advisory talent base, which is a key metric in Jacobs’ growth and in helping deliver smarter, more connected solutions for our clients in the future.

What do you like most about your role?

After 25 years in Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) engineering and 23 years in asset and project management consulting, I like that I can share my experiences and positively contribute to the careers of Jacobs’ junior managers and Jacobs more broadly. As a mentor, I also get to maintain relationships I have established and enjoyed during my time with Jacobs and to help those people continue to grow and develop.

Are there any pivotal moments or decisions that significantly impacted your career path?

I didn’t know it at the time, but my decision to join the RAAF in 1976 was the beginning of a long-term career contributing to Australia’s national security. Joining Jacobs 15 years ago was another moment that I look back on fondly as I am passionate about consultants delivering excellent service to clients. I’m proud that I still get to contribute to Australia’s national security as a member of the Jacobs team.

Jacobs Coaching and Mentoring Lead

How do you recommend setting and achieving short- and long-term career goals?

Just do it. Don’t rely on chance or outside influences. Govern your own destiny. Use tools that are available to assist you, like career planning guidance, performance and growth conversations and more.

Congratulations on your recent 200th game of Masters Australian Rules Football! How do the communication, leadership and teamwork skills you apply in a game of footy translate to your professional life?

Our team motto is “Footy for Fun”. Playing footy reminds me to take a similar approach to work. While we need to deliver quality service and products to our clients, it’s important to try to have some fun along the way.
