CH2M HILL Thought Leaders Co-author Chapters in Popular Environmental Contaminants Book

CH2M HILL announces that two thought leaders co-authored book chapters included in the second edition of Environmental Contaminants in Biota, Interpreting Tissue Concentrations. This updated edition, which was written by 46 scholars, is the authoritative work on interpreting concentrations of environmental contaminants in fish, wildlife, and aquatic invertebrates.
Dr. Harry Ohlendorf was the primary author of the chapter on Selenium in Birds. This chapter summarizes and interprets the extensive literature on selenium concentrations in bird food items and in various tissues that may cause effects on bird health or reproduction. Selenium is a chemical of concern, especially for water management, at many locations across North America and elsewhere such as mining operations, petroleum refineries, coal-fired power plants, and agricultural drainage disposal sites. This chapter provides information for assessment of potential effects on birds at such sites.
Dr. Ohlendorf has more than 39 years of experience in evaluating the impacts of environmental contaminants on wildlife in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including more than 20 years at CH2M HILL and 18 years with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Dr. Ohlendorf has published more than 80 papers in the fields of environmental toxicology and vertebrate ecology.
Cameron Irvine co-authored the chapter on Radionuclides in Biota. This chapter begins with a thorough, yet easy-to-read description of the basic principles of radiation and how it affects organisms differently than conventional chemicals. This is followed by a description of the various databases and tools available for evaluating radionuclide exposures and effects. The effects of radiation on different levels of the individual--from genes to the whole body--are summarized, and the reader is guided through a selection of the diverse literature with detailed descriptions from studies evaluating these effects on birds, mammals, invertebrates.
Mr. Irvine is an ecotoxicologist with more than 15 years of environmental and toxicity assessment experience throughout North America and in Europe. He is an active member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and the author of more than 30 technical reports on field ecology and eco-toxicology.
