Jacobs Receives EPCOR Contract

PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that it received a contract from EPCOR to provide engineering services for their proposed Genesee Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) project located 70 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Officials did not disclose the contract value.

The IGCC facility would demonstrate, on a commercial scale, coal gasification-based combined cycle electrical power generation technology in a single train unit, and is expected to offer significant efficiency and emissions benefits over existing conventional coal-fired power generation technologies. Jacobs' scope involves the pre-FEED (front-end engineering and design) and FEED engineering activities for this facility.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Chip Mitchell stated, "We are thrilled to apply our experience in the areas of gasification and alternative fuels and provide EPCOR with the engineering necessary to turn their vision into reality. Gasification is the process in which any hydrocarbon feed coal, coke, asphaltenes, and/or heavy fractions of crude is converted into carbon monoxide and hydrogen using oxygen and steam. The resulting mixture, known as syngas, can be used as a more efficient fuel source than the direct combustion of the original fuel. Gasification is an efficient method of energy extraction from many different types of organic materials, and also has applications as a clean waste disposal technique. This project alone has the capability to capture 1.25 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

The Genesee IGCC project is currently in its second phase, which is scheduled for completion in 2009. If subsequent investment and construction decisions go as planned, a 270-megawatt (net) generating station using the new technology would be targeted to commence operations in 2015.
