CH2M hosts work-experience programme to inspire the next generation of engineers

LONDON, 27 July 2015 – Today CH2M’s London office welcomes 20 students from the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) for a work-experience and mentoring programme to inspire them to continue their education and pursue engineering careers.

The students who are about to start the second year of their A-level and Scottish Higher exam studies, will spend one week with the company. During this time they will meet with employees and directors from across CH2M’s UK business, attend numerous activity sessions to replicate some of the challenges faced by colleagues on a daily basis and visit key project sites in London to gain an insight into the challenging and rewarding nature of engineering careers.

The trips include visits to key CH2M project offices, including the Thames Tideway Tunnel, Crossrail –– as well as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where CH2M was part of the delivery partner consortium to the Olympic Delivery Authority. 

The SMF programme has been designed to inspire the students to pursue STEM subjects and consider careers in engineering. As part of the programme, CH2M assigned each student a mentor who will dedicate 30 minutes per week for the next 12 months to provide ongoing support and guidance to the students and assist them in their next steps in higher education and as they start their careers.

Founded in 2005, the Social Mobility Foundation is a UK charity that supports high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds with education and networking opportunities to enable them to pursue professional careers. 

Director of European Corporate Affairs, Jonathan Refoy, said: “We are proud to be working with the SMF again leading this important programme and providing these young people with an important insight into working in the engineering sector. Programmes like this are fundamental to breaking down the barriers to entry to our industry to ensure the brightest talent in the UK becomes the next generation of engineers, scientists and technical professionals.”
