Learning Goes Outdoors during UK Apprentice Development Weekend
Experiential learning outdoors provides opportunities for people to face fresh challenges and develop new skills, helping them to feel more prepared for the next stage of their professional and personal growth. In the U.K. Jacobs is training more than 200 apprentices, at any one time, to become qualified engineers, designers, construction and project control technicians, and an important part of the structured training framework includes a full activity program outdoors.
The annual Apprentice Development Weekend at Lake Windermere, Cumbria, brings Jacobs’ U.K. apprentices together to learn different ways of working, alternative approaches to problem-solving, communication skills, and how working as a team can bring success. Personal challenges encourage them to build self-awareness, take ownership, welcome responsibility and discover their strengths.
Engineering Design Apprentice Katie Lyon has just returned from the weekend experience: “It was a fantastic opportunity to meet new colleagues on the Apprenticeship Program from multiple disciplines across Jacobs in the U.K. The activities were carefully chosen to optimize team work. We’d reflect on our progress throughout a task and relate these back to our working life at Jacobs. We set aims and goals to carry forward to the next task to continually improve and develop. It was great fun and really exceeded my expectations, it was challenging and very rewarding.”
Jacobs Learning & Development Manager Fallon Faulkner explained: “Over a three-year program, we guide our apprentices to professional registration through practical, ‘on-the-job’ development, fully supported by mentors from day one. They are integrated into our business, undertaking structured, blended learning through a mixture of formal classroom, workshop, office and site placements involving assignment, rotation and growth.
“Our apprentices work on live projects within multi-disciplinary project teams, so they build meaningful skills enabling them to take up junior positions in project teams once they have completed their Apprenticeship. We also offer post Apprenticeship routes to Higher Education via Higher National Certificate to Degree. Our programs are relevant, valuable and career building for the apprentice, providing the skill set to really establish their career.”
