Coaching the great engineering minds of tomorrow
Congratulations to our employees Nicole Del Monaco and Edith Gonzalez from our Morristown, NJ office for embodying Jacobs’ commitment to performance excellence and creating smart engineering solutions. In addition to the outstanding work Nicole and Edith contribute daily in the office, the engineers volunteered their expertise to help two local high school students and JerseySTEM members win first prize at the Filter Construction Challenge hosted by the American Water Works Association early this month.
High school students Amira Mouline and Alex Shaw were coached by Nicole and Edith throughout a six-week environmental and civil engineering course. The final challenge was to design the most effective water filter at the least self-weight and cost – a true innovation and engineering feat. The water filter that Mouline and Shaw created filtered 99 percent of total suspended solids and took first place in the category.
With the help of our engineers these students successfully implemented real-life engineering solutions and swept the competition. For Nicole and Edith this isn’t their only involvement with JerseySTEM, the two are citizen educators for the organization and regularly share their professional skills and knowledge with local students who have an interest in science and engineering.
JerseySTEM is a 501(c)3 co-op network of volunteer parents, professionals, retirees and corporations. JerseySTEM’s mission is to bridge the innovation gap in STEM education, the opportunity gap in New Jersey and the gender gap in society.
