Supporting Women in Engineering for International Women's Day
On March 8, International Women’s Day, WomEng is celebrating its 10th birthday. WomEng is a global social enterprise that aims to motivate, inspire and empower the next generation of engineering leaders. The organization focuses on attracting, developing and nurturing the next generation of women engineering leaders. Co-founder of WomEng Hema Vallabh said, "The number of women in engineering is of particular concern, as women are still grossly under-represented, being less than 20 percent in many countries. Increasing the number of women in engineering serves as a catalyst for job creation, social upliftment and economic development, and supports solving the global shortage of engineers."
As part of the celebration, WomEng will launch the #1MillionGirlsInSTEMsocial media campaign together with UNESCO. The campaign is a commitment to reach one million girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in the next 10 years, in at least 10 different geographies globally, with a strong focus on Africa.
Jacobs’ South Africa operations support WomEng in the form of in-kind sponsorship by providing the organization office space at our Waverley Office Park offices in Bramley (Johannesburg). “This is a big help for us and a significant show of support to our mission to develop the next generation of engineering leaders,” Vallabh commented.
