A unique rainwater harvesting system continues to provide significant environmental and financial benefits for the Sydney Theatre Company (STC).
The system, installed at STC’s home on The Wharf in Sydney Harbour, captures some 80% of the rainwater that falls on STC’s roof, providing non-potable water to all the artistic companies on Piers 4 and 5. It is estimated to have saved the equivalent of seven Olympic-sized swimming pools in town water.
The project was the brainchild of STC’s former artistic directors, Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Jacobs played a key role in achieving their vision, developing the concept and feasibility for the system.
The rainwater system is unique due to the structural, aesthetic and heritage context of the building. Rain is captured from The Wharf’s vast roof and connected to all downpipes which flow into the 445 metre pipe suspended beneath the pier. Water is then pumped through a reticulation system to all non-potable water outlets. The storage pipe under The Wharf is a modular system allowing sections to be taken offline during heritage maintenance work to the pier’s timber sub-structure. The rainwater harvesting can continue independently of this – an engineering feat which maintains water efficiency while upholding heritage requirements.
The system was originally intended for STC-use only but its storage structure and capacity have since been expanded so it can supply all Wharf tenancies.
The solution is the first of its size and scale in Australia and one of only a few in the world. It sets an important precedent for future water conservation systems on significant heritage architecture.

Safety and environmental performance are the first two values cited in the Magnox mission statement, and that's not surprising. As one of seven Site Licence Companies (SLCs) under contract to the United Kingdom Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Magnox is responsible for managing and operating ten nuclear power plant sites in the United Kingdom.
Magnox is currently managing the safe and environmentally-conscious defueling and decommissioning of nine nuclear power plants, as well as operating the last generating Magnox reactor in the U.K. To tackle these wide-ranging and technically challenging responsibilities, Magnox approaches the decommissioning process in specific, focused programs, working with a number of experienced partners, including Jacobs.
The company first called on us in the early 1980s to help design systems used to retrieve and dissolve radioactive materials. Since then, often working in a range of joint venture and framework arrangements, Jacobs has provided extensive expertise from business case preparation, integrated engineering and safety case capability, through to project management, construction, commissioning, and decommissioning across the nationwide Magnox fleet of nuclear facilities.
The integrated and collaborative work environment supported by all parties has been extremely successful. Drawing on many years' experience across multiple sites, Jacobs has worked closely with Magnox to develop transformational solutions and work methodologies to help deliver the Magnox Optimized Decommissioning Program.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, USA opened in 1974. Occupying 29.8-square miles, it is the second largest airport in terms of landmass in the United States. Jacobs has served DFW for more than 40 years. Our history begins at the very start, with the ground-breaking for runway construction in 1969. Since that time we have assisted DFW with various projects to help them continually improve their customer experience and stay up-to-date in an ever evolving industry.
DFW recently embarked on a seven-year, $2.3 billion capital development program including the modernization of its four legacy passenger terminals. The Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program is redefining the airport of the future with leading edge sustainable solutions that reduce maintenance and operations cost, allowing shared savings with airline customers.
Jacobs serves as DFW's Design and Design Management partner to co-design and apply innovative sustainable solutions utilized both during the construction phase and the final built product of Terminals A and C, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Station and the parking structures at Terminals A and E.

Suncor Energy is a pioneer in the oil sands industry. In 1967 they constructed an oil sands plant with the capacity to process 30,000 barrels per day; today the company sees average oil sands production of more than 350,000 barrels per day (as of Dec. 31, 2012).
In 2002, Suncor needed a partner to assist with work on the in situ Firebag project. The company they chose had to understand the complexities of oil sands production and what it is like to work in the extreme temperatures of Northern Alberta, Canada. Suncor chose Jacobs.
Since then, Suncor has worked with Jacobs on other projects as well. Recently, for example, we have begun helping to implement a corporate-wide energy management system and develop a roadmap to improve oil sands energy efficiency and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Moving forward, Jacobs intends to continue to partner with Eastman Chemical Company to seek out new ways to bring cost savings and safety improvements to the site, as well as provide support to the company's expansion into new products and markets. South East Water
When people living south and east of London turn on the tap, they expect their water supply to be safe, reliable, and environmentally sound.
South East Water meets those expectations, delivering over 550 million liters of water daily to two million customers in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. With over 14,500 kilometers of water mains, 339 pumping stations, 197 reservoirs, and 90-plus treatment works, this water utility needs a smart and efficient way to manage its infrastructure.
Jacobs has been helping meet that critical need, providing environmental, health and safety, and program management support on a range of capital delivery programs.
We first partnered with South East Water in 2009; creating a highly effective, integrated delivery team that combines South East Water's knowledge of asset management and stakeholder engagement with Jacobs' expertise in delivering complex infrastructure programs. The teams have collaborated on the delivery of treatment plants, reservoirs and new water sources, water mains, flood and emergency plans, and strategic pipeline planning.
By sharing both project responsibilities and program outcomes, a lasting alliance has been forged. South East Water has cut pre-construction costs by 20 percent, while gaining valuable expertise and leading-edge program management capabilities.

Minera Chinalco Peru (MCP), part of the Chinese state-owned Chinalco group, is building the Toromocho copper mining project, located east of Lima high in the Peruvian Andes. The project includes the development of a large open pit mine followed by ore processing - at an anticipated rate of 117,200 tonnes per day - to produce copper concentrates and molybdenum oxide.
Located in one of the world's most extreme environments at 16,000 feet altitude, the project is a complex effort that has faced a number of immense technical challenges and changes over several years.
Throughout that dynamic process, Jacobs has forged an enduring relationship with MCP. Since 2006, we have delivered a broad range of services to support all phases of the project, including initial feasibility studies, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, and construction management. Jacobs has utilized resources from our offices in the United States, Chile, Peru, Canada, and China, and in 2013 delivered a feasibility study for an ambitious 45 percent plant expansion.
