Acid Plants

Chemetics has been designing and building complete acid plants for more than 30 years. These plants incorporate Chemetics’ proprietary equipment designs, resulting in cost competitive plants with low operating and maintenance costs.

Chemetics designs plants that produce acid from three feedstocks: elemental sulfur (Sulfur Burning); SO2 offgas from smelters or other sources (Metallurgical); and spent sulfuric acid (Spent Acid Regeneration).

Sulfur Burning Acid Plants
Chemetics has designed and built acid plants utilizing elemental sulfur as a feedstock ranging in size from 500-4400 metric tons per day (MTPD). Our typical process is shown in the diagram below:

Sulfur Burning

Chemetics sulphur burning plants incorporate Chemetics proprietary designs for:

  • Above ground, conical bottom melter
  • Sulfur gun
  • Sulfur furnace, with no baffle walls
  • Stainless steel converter with internal superheater and exchanger
  • Radial flow gas-gas exchangers
  • Anodically protected coolers
  • SARAMET® piping and distributors

Metallurgical Acid Plant
Chemetics has designed and built acid plants utilizing SO2 from smelters, ranging in size from 500-4000 MTPD. An overview of our process is shown in the diagram below:

Chemetics metallurgical acid plants feature Chemetics proprietary designs for:

  • Quench venturi
  • Variable throat scrubber venturi
  • Stainless steel converter with multiple internal exchangers
  • Radial flow gas-gas exchangers
  • Anodically protected coolers
  • SARAMET® piping and distributors

Spent Acid Regeneration (SAR) Plants
Chemetics has designed and built acid plants utilizing spent sulfuric acid as H feestock ranging in size from 200-1500 MTPD. An overview of our process is shown in the diagram below:

Chemetics’ SAR plants incorporate Chemetics proprietary designs for:

  • Spent acid guns
  • Regeneration furnace, with no baffle walls
  • Quench venturi
  • Variable throat scrubber venturi
  • Stainless steel converter with multiple internal exchangers
  • Radial flow gas-gas exchangers
  • Anodically protected coolers
  • SARAMET® piping and distributors

Each Chemetics plant is custom designed for each client’s requirements. Acid plant technology options available include:

  • Single and double absorption contact plants
  • Tail gas and start up scrubber systems (hydrogen peroxide/caustic/ammonia)

  • Effluent treatment plants
  • Sulfur and acid storage

Chemetics acid recovery and concentration technologies can also be applied to effluent treatment plants, which are being increasingly required to treat the liquid effluent resulting from the wet gas cleaning sections of metallurgical sulfuric acid plants.

Chemetics offers treatment for these weak acids which are often contaminated with a variety of heavy metals, including arsenic, selenium and mercury. In many cases these weak acids are neutralized to produce gypsum.

Chemetics offers technologies and techniques to separate contaminants from the gypsum to produce a saleable product and an environmentally safe solid effluent, or alternatively, clean and concentrate the weak acid to produce a commercial grade acid.
