Haymarket Station named winner of Saltire Civil Engineering Award

CH2M was responsible for delivering the multi-disciplinary detail design package for the project, working with Morgan Sindall as design and build contractors for Network Rail as the client.

The Haymarket Station Capacity Improvement Project has been named the winner of the 2015 Saltire Civil Engineering Award. Announced annually, the Saltire Civil Engineering Award is a much coveted accolade from the Saltire Society and the Institution of Civil Engineers Scotland recognising excellence and innovation in civil engineering.

CH2M was responsible for delivering the multi-disciplinary detail design package for the project, working with Morgan Sindall as design and build contractors for Network Rail as the client.

The new multi-modal transport interchange at Haymarket in Edinburgh's west end was developed to receive an expected 6 million increase in passenger numbers over the next 15 years. The £25 million redevelopment includes the refurbishment of an existing Grade A listed station building and a major extension, which includes a new concourse building bridging all platforms.

The project was praised for its innovative approach to staging, with the superstructure being constructed in a former car park adjacent to the station with two 110 tonne modules to be lifted into place overnight. This creative solution enabled the completion date to be brought forward significantly, and ensured work was undertaken while the station was fully operational and without disruption to train services.

CH2M has been working on projects in the Haymarket area since 2005 including the Haymarket Area Masterplan study, feasibility studies on the interchange development, outline design and detail design on the station area and investigations of the tunnel and drainage systems.

Commenting on the award win, Grahame McGrow, Regional Client Manager at CH2M, said, "We are delighted to have been named the winner of this prestigious award. This is a great example of CH2M delivering high quality strategic consulting and design for the principal stakeholders in rail in Scotland. This is a testimony to the hard work our teams carry out on a daily basis and the broader competence of our team in Scotland and beyond."
